- Netley Abbey – Explore the romantic ruins of this 13th-century Cistercian abbey, the most complete of its kind in southern England.

- New Forest National Park – Just a short drive away, the New Forest offers wild ponies, forest trails, cycle routes, and charming villages.
- Local Wanders
Take a relaxing riverside walk from the cottage and along the way, stop for a drink or bite to eat at one of several great local pubs and cafés. Or take a peaceful countryside walk starting through Manor Farm, where footpaths lead you across open fields and through woodland that borders the beautiful River Hamble. Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning, uninterrupted views of the tranquil river — with not a house in sight, just nature at its finest – all within walking distance from the cottage.
Hop on the River Taxi
A quirky local favourite – the pink river taxi – can collect you directly from Myrtle’s pontoon (tide and operating hours permitting). Just mention Myrtle Cottage, next to the Jolly Sailor Pub. Take a short scenic trip downriver to the charming historic village of Hamble-le-Rice, where you’ll find excellent gastro pubs, cafés, and independent shops.
Visit the Isle of Wight
Fancy a day trip? Head to Southampton for ferry services to the Isle of Wight (with or without your car) or catch the world’s only year-round passenger hovercraft from Portsmouth to Ryde for a quick and fun crossing.
